Position Type: Part-Time (3 Days a Week)
Hours: 8:15 AM – 3:15 PM

Salary: $51,000.00

Summary:

Pillar Elementary School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Reading Specialist to support literacy development for students with special needs in grades Pre-K through 8th. The ideal candidate will provide targeted reading instruction, collaborate with teachers and therapists, and offer professional development to enhance literacy instruction school-wide. Additionally, the Reading Specialist will communicate with parents, providing recommendations and strategies to support literacy development at home.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct reading instruction to small groups and individual students based on their specific needs.
  • Assess students’ reading abilities and implement appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals to integrate literacy strategies into the curriculum.
  • Support students through in-classroom instruction and individualized literacy sessions.
  • Develop and lead professional development sessions on best practices in reading instruction.
  • Work as part of a team to evaluate and recommend reading programs to be implemented schoolwide.
  • Monitor student progress, adjust instructional approaches as needed, and document interventions.
  • Collaborate with classroom staff to implement evidence-based literacy strategies tailored to students with special needs.
  • Communicate with parents, providing recommendations and strategies to support their child’s reading development at home.
  • Attend and participate in IEP meetings providing appropriate input.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Valid NJ DOE Reading Specialist Certification (Required).
  • Experience working with students with special needs is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of literacy intervention strategies and differentiated instruction.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with parents and staff.
  • Passionate about improving literacy skills and fostering a love for reading in students.
