Position Overview

Rock Brook School seeks a highly qualified School Business Manager to oversee all financial operations of our private, non-profit school serving students with communication impairments and developmental disabilities. Responsibilities include budget management ($5M), audits, payroll, benefits, tuition contracts, and compliance with NJDOE and GAAP standards. 

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the School Business Manager is responsible for overseeing all financial operations of the school and its affiliated Foundation. This includes fiscal planning, budget analysis, payroll, employee benefits, audits, and compliance with New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) regulations. The Business Manager also presents financial information to the Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board of Trustees, and serves as a liaison to internal and external stakeholders.

All staff at Rock Brook are expected to support the school’s mission: providing the highest quality services to each student and their family. The Business Manager plays a central role in ensuring that our instructional programs are supported by sound financial planning and management. This is a full-time, salaried position with the option for partial remote work (hybrid schedule) based on the needs of the school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, manage, and monitor the annual operating budgets (approximately $5 million) for the school and the school’s Foundation

  • Conduct financial forecasting and analysis to support decision-making

  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of annual audits, aiming for clean audit results

  • Oversee internal controls and compliance with applicable laws, codes, and GAAP standards

  • Prepare and maintain tuition contracts in a timely and accurate manner

  • Administer payroll and coordinate employee benefits, including health insurance and 401(k) plan administration

  • Prepare documentation for annual 401(k) valuation and Form 5500 filings

  • Provide financial reports and updates at Board of Trustees meetings

  • Collaborate with external agencies and auditors, as well as school and Foundation staff

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required

  • *Must possess one of the following (as required by NJDOE for APSSD school business managers hired after July 1, 2017):

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, or a closely related field; OR current license as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA); OR valid New Jersey School Business Administrator Certificate (endorsement code 0109), issued by the NJ Department of Education

  • Minimum of 18 credit hours in economics, accounting, finance, organizational theory, management, or law (required for SBA certificate eligibility)

  • Experience in budget development, financial reporting, and audit coordination, preferably in an educational or nonprofit setting

  • Demonstrated experience with budget development, financial reporting, and audit coordination

  • Familiarity with NJDOE financial requirements for private schools

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, and regulatory compliance

  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple responsibilities and handle confidential information with discretion

*Note: Per NJDOE regulations, individuals who held the position of School Business Manager at an APSSD prior to July 1, 2017, may be exempt from the degree/certification requirements listed above, provided there has been no break in service in that role.

Salary & Benefits:

Commensurate with education and experience (current full-time salary range $75,000-$100,000)
