Description of Company: Since 1891, St. Joseph’s School for the Blind has been providing specialized services to individuals with visual impairments across New Jersey. Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, the School is comprised of several programs, such as: Early Intervention, In-district Support Services, and School for the Blind, and Adult Services. School Program: St. Joseph’s School for the Blind is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teacher of Students with Disabilities to provide specialized instruction and support to students with diverse learning, developmental, and physical needs. The successful candidate will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), create engaging and inclusive learning environments, monitor student progress, collaborate with families and multidisciplinary teams, and support students in achieving their academic, social, and transitional goals. This role requires a commitment to individualized instruction, behavior support, personal care assistance, and active participation in school programs and activities while fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive educational environment for all students.

Qualifications:

• New Jersey Certification - Teacher of the Visually Impaired Standard (preferred)
• New Jersey Certification – Teacher of Students with Disabilities or Teacher of the Handicapped Standard Certificate (Required)
• Bachelors – Special Education or higher
• At least 2 years of experience with children disabilities required.
• Willing to go back to school for the Teacher of the Visually Impaired Standard Certificate with two years of employment

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
• Develops, plans, and implements IEP for each student in conjunction with the Principal and Education Supervisor.
• Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
• Attends Pre-IEP and IEP meetings.
• Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
• Participates in planning and implementing of specific behavior interventions as well as training opportunities.
• Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
• Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs of the students.
• Prepares Individual Transitional Plans in collaboration with the Transition Coordinator as assigned. 
• Strives to implement by instruction and action, the School’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
• Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides timely progress reports as required.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Assists students with daily living skills and personal care, including supporting their restroom needs, among other responsibilities related to hygiene.
• Supports students during pool sessions by actively participating in the pool activities, engaging with the students, and fulfilling other responsibilities related to pool supervision.
• Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, school policy and administrative regulations.
• Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and makes provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.  (Example: holiday play, back to school night).
• Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.
• Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
• Performs such other student related or programmatic tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
• Sets an example for the students and the community as a representative of St. Joseph’s.
• Implements all school policies and procedures.

Job Type – Full time Contract

Schedule – Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Salary: $70,000 - $90,000 per year (Based on experience)

• Jersey City, NJ 07307: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (Preferred)

Experience:

• Teaching: 2 years (Required)
• Special education: 2 years (Required)

License/Certification:

• NJ Teacher of the Visually Impaired Certification (Preferred)
• New Jersey Certification – Teacher of Students with Disabilities or Teacher of the Handicapped Standard Certificate (Required)
